One of the most complete uke players in the world today.
~ Kamuke Magazine #2 (2011)

UkuleleZaza is a firm favorite in the European ukulele community & has been at the forefront of the ukulele revival for over 10 years. His gentle touch, right hand wizardry & tasteful arrangements have inspired, & continue to inspire, ukulele players worldwide. (For more of UkuleleZaza’s bio, see below.)

WORKSHOP #1: Strum Fun!  1-2:30pm
Music is all about expression, & in 35 years of playing, Zaza has developed a unique smooth & groovy playing style. In this workshop he’ll demonstrate his techniques. You’ll learn to add color & emotion to your music with strums & dynamics that are easy and efficient, & some that require a bit more practice, like his own invention, ‘The Peacock’. All ideas in the workshop work for most genres of music. Suitable for all levels.

WORKSHOP #2: Swing It!  3:30-5pm
In this workshop Zaza will teach you the basics (& beyond!) of swing music, from laid-back after-beat variations to fingerpicking swing, & of course the quintessential, fierce, gypsy jazz rhythm. Most toe-tapping techniques taught in this workshop work for other music styles as well. Suitable for all levels.

Remco says, I’ve been playing ukulele for about 35 years (I’m 45 now). My main focus is 1920s/30s jazz & Hawaiian music, & I play quite a few original tunes as well. For the past 12 years, since the uke revival started, I’ve organized ukulele festivals, performed at ukulele festivals throughout Europe, & toured in Australia & Japan. This is my first real US tour & I’m very excited!

Early days
Ukulelezaza (real name Remco Houtman-Janssen, born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands in 1973) started playing ukulele at age 11. His mother actively organized George Formby fanclub meetings & sang & played ukulele & uke-banjo in several bands. Remco lost interest in the uke during his teens, but rekindled that interest in 1994 after strumming a few chords on the the banjolele that he’d always kept. He’s been playing passionately ever since.

One of Europe’s finest
From the mid-1990s onwards, Remco played in Hawaiian bands & attended many ukulele events in the UK, forming the basis of his unique style of playing. In 2006 he started a Youtube channel, his first outing as Ukulelezaza, which currently has over 3500 subscribers & a total of 1.3 million views. Nowadays, when performing solo, Zaza mostly plays 1920s/30s music & original instrumentals using a variety of vintage ukuleles. His gentle touch & overall right hand mastery rank him amongst Europe’s finest ukulele players, featured at ukulele festivals throughout the world. Zaza is also the co-founder & organizer of the Belgian Ukulele Festival, which had its first edition in 2007 & became the inspiration & blueprint for the major European ukulele festivals today.

Bag of tricks second to none
Zaza is an experienced ukulele teacher for all levels with a bag of tricks second to none. His workshops are a highlight for many aspiring & experienced players alike. He published four tablature books with his own ukulele solo arrangements of famous & more obscure songs from the Golden Jazz Era. Hundreds of people throughout the world play his arrangements, many of which found their way to Youtube. Each book also features information about & plenty of photographs of the ukuleles he passionately collects. Zaza also released two solo albums on which he plays ukulele, plectrum banjo, tenor guitar, mandolin & lapsteel guitar.

Since 2007 he’s performed at festivals in Great Britain, Ireland, France, Australia, Italy, Czech Republic, Finland & Japan!
